We started with reminders about EE drafts and registration for the IB Exams. We then moved in to class discussion on justice. If you were absent, please get the free write questions to do and the discussion notes, then write your answers and reflection on the discussion in your journal.
Check out this article for more about truth: www.economist.com/china/2018/09/20/chinas-global-times-plays-a-peculiar-role Today we watched the Blasey Ford – Kavanaugh hearing – and discussed a bit re: memory, emotion, language, etc. If you were absent, please watch one hour of the testimony and take notes in your journal. Be sure to watch parts from both Blasey Ford and Kavanaugh.
Important Dates 9/28: Watch 20 minutes on your own of the hearing; take notes – Per. 1 & 2, watch some Kavanaugh's testimony; Per. 5, watch some of Blasey-Ford’s prepared opening remarks Today we talked about the Blasey-Ford – Kavanaugh article, truth, belief and memory. If you were absent, please get the notes from someone and write a reflection on the discussion for your journal.
Siri decided which team would speak and which would record for today’s discussion on Locke. Regardless of which team you were on, make sure you have your initial free write from the start of class and then your reflections of the discussion in your journal – although the speaking team’s will be shorter. Tonight, familiarize yourself with what is happening regarding the Supreme Court nomination process, then read and take notes on this article for class tomorrow.
If you were absent, you have a few things to do in addition to the above. No matter what team you are on you need to get the notes from someone present, record them and then write your reflections on the discussion in your journal. If you happen to have been absent and you were on the speaking team for your period you will be excused from the discussion in the gradebook, but you still have to do the writing for your journal grade. Important Date 9/26: Read and take notes on your thinking regarding this opinion piece First students did a self-evaluation on The Cave class discussion and turned in the Chapter 1 Synthesis Sheet. Then everyone read the following article and discussed the implications it has on the relationship between culture and knowledge:
https://hbr.org/2018/09/how-to-get-better-at-reading-people-from-different-cultures. Finally, students were given time to read this excerpt from Locke. Please finish reading and taking notes tonight, be prepared to discuss the article tomorrow. If you were absent, please complete The Cave evaluation, Locke reading, article linked above read/notes and turn in your Chapter 1 Synthesis Sheet. The evaluation quarter sheet can be found by the turn inbox in the classroom when you return. Important Dates 9/25: Locke excerpt – read and take notes on your thinking Today we did a bit of work on the TOK Journals. Expect them in be collected in early October – but I will give you some notice before they are due. The rest of the time was spent reading the rest of Chapter 1 in the textbook (pgs. 13-27) and completing a “synthesis sheet”. Please have that ready to turn in at the beginning of class on Monday. If you were absent, please complete the handout on your own and turn it in when you return to class (or follow the absence policy for the appropriate due date).
Important Dates 9/24: Chapter 1 “Synthesis Sheet” – yes, I realize not all of it is asking for synthesis, but it sounds good! :) We finished Plato and worked out what we was saying the in allegory of The Cave. Tonight, think about: 1.) do agree with any of Plato’s ideas? 2.) why or why not? 3.) why we did we do this reading? If you were absent, please record a classmate’s discussion notes and reflect in your journal on the questions above.
We continued our discussion on the Plato excerpt and got closer to figuring out the allegory. We will continue (finish?) the discussion tomorrow. If you were absent, please record a classmate’s discussion notes and read this excerpt from a different work by Plato to help better understand the allegory of The Cave (– maybe?).
Today we discussed the Plato excerpt and tried to figure out the allegory. We will continue the discussion tomorrow. If you were absent, please start a new journal entry and record a classmate’s discussion notes.
Read this excerpt from Plato’s The Republic. Remember to take notes that show evidence of thinking – connections, reactions, thoughtful questions, etc.
Please AVOID doing the ‘efficient-student’ behaviors of looking up what the text means. I want you to practice what it means to learn from the text – not what it takes to have someone tell you what the text says. Thanks for just reading, reflecting, and writing down any questions that you have. We will begin class on Tuesday with your questions. Important Dates 9/18: finish reading and taking notes on the Plato excerpt Today we finished reading and thinking about the Tao-Te Ching passages. We then started a discussion on what makes a successful learner, according Lao-tzu (what we know from the passages, anyway). We will finish this discussion on Monday. If you were absent, please finish reading and taking notes on the passages and then write your own answer to the prompt in your journal entry started yesterday. Additionally, if you were absent in 2nd period, please turn in your passages with your notes.
We looked at a text and used various ‘ways of knowing’ to figure out what it was, it a certain extent. We then spent the last few minutes reading and taking notes on a few passages of the Tao-Te Ching. If you were absent, get the journal notes from a fellow classmate and spend 10 minutes reading and writing your reactions on the excerpts – no need to finish, just do 10 minutes.
Today Mr. Wilder talked to everyone about Diploma expectations and care. Please e-mail him for any missed information if you were absent.
We talked about maps and completed our second journal entry. If you were absent, talk with someone about what we did to complete your journal entry or see me upon your return to class.
Important Dates 9/12: read the first 11 pages of Chapter 1 from the TOK textbook Interested in more about maps? Think about this.... www.theguardian.com/technology/2014/dec/02/how-digital-maps-changing-the-way-we-understand-world We talked about knowing and then did a map activity. If you were absent do the activity on page 1 of Chapter 1 of your textbook titled “Get ready to draw” before you return to class.
